I have been wanting to try the Whole 30 for a month or so now but wanted to get the Great North Run and our holiday out the way. I have heard such good things about it and I think the thing I am going to find the hardest to cut out is sugar and wine. I love wine and chocolate on a Friday night to relax. It will be fizzy water and frozen grapes instead!
I have
decided to try and keep a daily diary of how it goes and hopefully not bore you
all senseless! I am also interested to
see if it keeps in with the Whole 30 time line.
Day One
As predicted
from the time line, I am feeling good and enthusiastic. I did some batch cooking on Sunday as I have
a busy week planned so feeling organised and ready.
Breakfast is
a tasty (although slightly over cooked) breakfast casserole made with eggs, grated
butternut squash, GF sausages, onions and peppers. I have four portions for each day.
I have had a
pre-run snack today of nuts, seeds and banana (little amount of each).
Lunch is a
portion of Turkey Chilli made with loads of veg.
Pre swim snack
is a nakd bar. I really need to sort out
a better pre exercise snack
Dinner was a
slow cooked chicken casserole. I added
extra chicken portions for later in the week. I totally forgot to take a picture.
So day one
has gone well. I have missed sugar all ready but I was expecting that. I am just hoping and praying I don’t get a
migraine later this week as I did the last time I tried to cut sugar out.
Day 2 – today
should be the hangover.
Today is also WIAW so thought i would share my week so far on the lovely Peas and Crayon blog.
Well the
morning started with me feeling actually really well. I had been unwell the night before but think
that was more tiredness than anything else and went to be early. I feel better for it today. I was hungry last night after my dinner that
I ended up snacking on seeds and nuts and not sure that is the best idea but
will see how I get on.
My breakfast,
lunch and snacks are the same as yesterday but todays dinner is Zoodles with
tuna and tomato sauce.
The sauce was so simple and tasty.
One onion chopped
2 handfuls of frozen peppers
1 clove garlic crushed
1 chilli chopped
1 tsp of coconut oil
10 chopped olives
tin/carton of chopped tomatoes
1 tin of tuna in springwater (drained)
heat coconut oil in a pan and add onion, peppers, garlic and chilli. Cook till soft but don't burn the garlic. Add tin tomatoes and cook on low for 10 minutes then add drained tuna and chopped olives. mix in with zoodles or pasta and serve. Lovely. Capers added would have been lovely too but didn't have any.
I am finding
that having the nuts, seeds and banana about 1 hour before going out running is
working really well. I am going to look
at snacks that I have throughout the day as eventually I want to stop snacks
but not snacks before exercise as I hate exercising hungry.
I can
honestly say that I felt so much better today than day one and feeling
positive.
I have been
going on instagram a lot and looking at #whole30 and there are some tasty ideas
that I can’t wait to try out.
Day 3 – Hangover again
Well I don’t want to tempt fate but I woke up feeling really
good and positive today. I have been
making a real effort to get 8 hours sleep and I think it is really paying off.
Today’s meals are little dull to report on as I am having
the same breakfast, snacks and lunch as the last 2 days (thanks to batch
cooking) but I am enjoying them.
Tonight I started college so begins the dash home to college
and a quick dinner so it was left over chicken casserole with French beans and
it was lovely.
I have been surprised at home good I have felt today.
Day 4 – Angry
Well this
morning the alarm went off and I hoped this feeling good feeling would continue
as I jumped out of bed but I felt like I hadn’t slept for a week. I had a
nakd bar and went for an early morning swim.
Not sure what
else to eat before exercise. Once I was out I had the last slice of my
breakfast casserole on the way to work.
I was feeling
grouchy and tired and I didn’t know why so once I got to work and checked the
time line I knew exactly why as today and tomorrow are angry days. I
didn’t think I would follow the time line that much and I certainly hadn’t the
first 3 days so this is a surprise. What out everyone tomorrow if today
is anything to go by!!
So lunch time
was also my last batch of turkey chilli and I am so over that now!!! I
was pleased once dinner rolled round and we had tasty pork loin pieces with new
potatoes, carrots, onion and mushrooms.
I will be
honest that as the day has gone on I have felt increasingly shit! I
started with a headache that will not go away and as a migraine suffer I am
worried I end up with one through the night. I have been ready for bed
all day!!!!!
I realised
that I had not mentioned my exercise much this week. Well I am easing
myself back into it and finding it hard as I have nothing on the horizon.
I think I will sign up to an 7 miler that I have seen and start planning next
years Triathlons. I think I need to do a post on next years plans.
I am excited as my first triathlon has definitely had given me the bug.
So this week
I have ran Monday, Tuesday and swam on Thursday. I plan to go
spinning tonight and I think I will try a longer run on Sunday. I don’t
know what I am doing this weekend but think we are looking at holiday options
for next year. Exciting!!!!
Day 5 – Angry
Well today I am
feeling good really good and I am surprised.
I was geared up for another angry day and it really has not been the
case at all. In fact I feel really
good. I do think that this weekend is going to be a
real challenge.
Today I had
bacon and scrambled egg while everyone else had buttie/sandwiches.
Lunch after a
quick run I had sweet potato and butter nut squash with pumpkin seeds.
So yummy.
For dinner
tonight we are having Prawn Thai Green curry and cauliflower rice and I am looking forward
to it. I am worried about not having a
glass of wine tonight as I always really enjoy it. I have a plan and will have fizzy water with
strawberries and I might make a nice fake banana ice cream mmmmmm.
Day 6 and Day
7 – I need a nap
Well actually
not really. Day 6, Saturday, I woke up
with a headache but to be honest I don’t know why but I seem to always have a
headache in a Saturday morning for some reason.
In all honestly I was in a grouchy mood all day and it never really went
until I woke up on Sunday. Saturday
morning I woke up nice and early and had a scrambled eggs for breakfast and had
a look through some cook books. We went
shopping and had lunch in a little café.
I had a jacket potato with Chicken and bacon and a nice fresh
salad. I took some snacks with me of nuts and seeds.
For dinner I decided
to have a burger with a large mushroom with tomatoes and sweet potato
wedges.
It was seriously
yummy.
I found Saturday
afternoon hard as normally we have a glass of wine after shopping and I did
miss that. I made myself a lovely glass
of sparkling water with frozen red berries.
It was lovely and once the berries had defrosted I ate the berries and
they were lovely.
Sunday was a
proper Autumn morning and I woke up feeling really good. I had
a lovely breakfast of fried eggs, mushrooms and tomatoes. It was lovely and so filling.
I didn’t
really have any lunch but did have some nuts and seeds. For dinner I made a tasty chicken casserole
with roasted potatoes and veg. it was so
tasty.
I had a
mocktail or frozen berries, coconut milk and sparkling water.
First week
has gone much better than I thought it would.
Has anyone done the Whole 30 and how did you get on?
What was the hardest thing you have ever cut out?
